How Chiropractic Works

Chiropractic is the detection and correction of vertebral subluxation (misalignment of the spinal vertebra). This allows the body to maintain balance and homeostasis through a properly functioning nervous system. The spine is a chain of 33 linked vertebra that protects your spinal cord, which transmits impulses through the nervous system. All physiological functions—from motion to growth and repair—are controlled by the spinal cord and nervous system.

The health of your spine affects the health of your whole body.

The nervous system is truly a biological marvel. However, the spine is delicate in many respects and subject to misalignment, disease, malformation, and injury. An improperly functioning spine can result in pain, lack of mobility, and poor health. Chiropractic care corrects spinal misalignment, restoring function and mobility and allowing for overall health and vitality.

Chiropractic BioPhysics is a Tested Technique

While there are many techniques to correct spinal misalignment, those developed by Chiropractic BioPhysics® have been tested for decades through clinical research and trials. They offer the most studied methods for finding vertebral subluxation and providing true corrective treatment.

Spinal rehabilitation

Chiropractic BioPhysics® has determined a normal mathematical spinal model and it is in using this model that we can determine the health of your spine and the treatment needed for the correction of abnormalities.

Getting the Full Picture of Your Spine

At Hanover Family Chiropractic, we provide comprehensive spinal analysis which includes a posture examination (to see overall patterns of misalignment), a palpation examination (to feel position of vertebra) and an in-depth x-ray analysis of the spine which allows us to look at individual vertebral displacement, disc spaces, curve and angle measurement, the contour and density of the vertebra, and the presence of disease and degeneration.

We show our patients these findings in precise detail and compare them to accepted norms. Then, a corrective treatment regime is prescribed which includes Mirror-Image® adjustments of the spine, traction, and exercises to help correct spinal abnormalities, prevent future problems and relieve pain. Home exercises and stretches are also recommended to provide for the best results.

Chiropractic Care for Children

As Doctors of Chiropractic, we understand our role in helping everyone achieve their fullest health potential. Because faulty structure of the spine can adversely affect the function of the nervous system , it makes perfect sense that the growing spine and body should be checked regularly to ensure optimal nerve system function and communication.

Most of the spinal problems we work with in adults start decades prior, becoming apparent when significant spinal degeneration and pain express later on in life. Many issues start with early life traumas such as a stressful birth process, too much time in a car seat or baby carrier, and falls.

Ideally, we check infants and children for postural asymmetries and vertebral subluxation, and monitor their spines throughout life to be sure that sports injuries, electronic device postures, and emotional stresses do not add up to abnormal alignment. Often, parents finally seek Chiropractic care for their children after they have a chronic health problem. The World Health Organization states that approximately 27% of children suffer from chronic illness. We can all take steps to insure the health and potential of our children, including maintaining a healthy spine, that can allow for the best internal communication and control of the body and its healing ability.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Early detection of scoliosis and scoliosis contributors, like anatomical leg length inequality and abnormal posture, are key for successful treatment of adolescent scoliosis. When discovering a significant scoliosis, underlying pathology must first be ruled out. The adolescent spine needs to be carefully managed and observed. The rapid growth of the spinal column at this age can lead to rapid increases in some curvatures of the spine.

Although there are no randomized controlled trials showing evidence that spinal manipulative therapy can influence scoliosis or it’s progression, there are case studies to support the work done in a Chiropractic Biophysics office. Our first goal is pain relief when pain is present. Our second goal is improved posture and lastly, we look for improvement of the Cobb angle. At times, reducing the Cobb angle is not possible, but the slowing or ceasing of progression may be aided.

Bracing is an option often recommend for curvatures of a significant magnitude. We are a provider of Scolibrace, a TSLRO brace that incorporates mirror image postural stresses. Co-management with your pediatrician and Orthopedic doctors is advised.

Post Adolescent and Adult Scoliosis

Again our goal is pain relief, improved functionality, improved posture, and, when possible, a reduction of the Cobb angle. Usually at this point in the growth cycle there is less concern about a rapid increase in the curvatures.

After skeletal maturity other factors such as stiffness, flexibility and activities can impact ones quality of life and health. Again, whole body posture can still be improved for better outcomes. Mirror image spinal adjustments, in office traction, whole body vibration, and home spinal orthotics for home traction are all part of our protocol.
